Today in the SAILOR history: Bad Segeberg 1991, Rotenburg an der Fulda 2001

  • Mood:

It's 18 years ago that SAILOR had their big comeback performance in Bad Segeberg (Germany) after their reunion. They also played there again yesterday and we have a lot to report, but this will follow in a separate entry later.
Here's what the official SAILOR biography from the old fan club said about this concert in 1991:
"It is a hot summer evening and a fifteen thousand strong audience seated in an outdoor environment, similar to a Roman amphitheatre, is waiting in anticipation for a very special opening act. The rapturous applause for SAILOR is way beyond Grant, Georg, Henry and Phil's expectations as they emerge from a giant sized juke box, evoking a feeling that they have been beamed back to Earth after their twelve-year absence. Wearing battered-looking white suits but looking remarkably unbattered and youthful, the band bounds with enthusiasm to their waiting instruments, the opening bars of "A Glass Of Champagne" literally bringing the audience to its feet. The momentous occasion is further enhanced by the other acts due to play that evening forsaking their last-minute rehearsals to witness and applaud SAILOR's return."

And...
It's 8 years ago that SAILOR played in Rotenburg an der Fulda, Germany, today. The concert was the first concert with then new SAILOR member Rob Alderton who took over the left side the Nickelodeon, acordion etc. from then on until July 2005.
For us this was a great surprise, because the SAILORs hadn't told us about the new band member, and even when we met the boys at the hotel before their concert, Phil told us a strange story about Anthony England having missed the flight. BUT we knew something was wrong... not only because this story was rather weird, but also because Peter and Grant quickly disappeared and pushed another scared-looking young guy that we didn't know into the elevator.
Well, when SAILOR staretd their show we saw them come on stage: Peter, Grant, Phil and..... and - the "young guy" from the hotel instead of Anthony, dressed in the usual Henry Marsh outfit. It was very strange at first, and even though it had been clear that something had to be "wrong" we were a bit shocked, but then we realised that this new guy was a very good keyboarder and accordion player - not knowing that Rob's full talents would only surfaced during his next shows...
After the show the other three SAILORs were really proud of their surprise. We were able to talk to the new SAILOR at the concert hall and then met the boys at the hotel again after the show to talk and to take the first new band photo. Marvellous...
